“We Honor Veterans” is a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Veteran’s Administration designed to empower hospice professionals to meet the needs of dying veterans. 1,000 veterans die every day, yet only a quarter of those veterans received care or services from the VA system. Hospices across the country have reached out to veterans with serious illness, helping them access their VA benefits along with hospice services.
At Hospice of the Miami Valley, we recognize this program as a way for us to give our Veterans the respect and recognition they serve. Our staff conducts a formal Military Pinning Ceremony for each of our patients who have served our country. Additionally, we have established a “Vet-to-Vet” initiative that matches Veteran Volunteers with Veteran patients to foster the support and particular understanding that only those who have serve know how to give.
Hospice of the Miami Valley is proud to have been awarded the top recognition of a “Level 4” Hospice-Veteran Partner. This achievement has only been obtained by a few hospices. This means we have committed to providing continuing community outreach and support for veterans at the highest level.
We are excited to announce that Pat Cook, one of our Hospice Social Workers, and an Iraqi Veteran, leads our Veterans Assessment Team which helps our veterans access all the VA benefits to which they are entitled.
